January Update

Lots of important news in this one!  Including details of some calls you will NOT want to miss.  One of them starts in about 2 hours, so hit that "read more" button right now to get updated!

2nd Sunday Statewide Call
Tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, Jan.11 @ 4pm), our monthly statewide Zoom call will be focused on starting a local group.  It's easier than you think!  Smith County just affiliated and they're just 1 person!  (yes, it helped that it was Kevin McCormick, long time TXGreen, who's served on multiple committees, but still... it could be you!)
We'll also want to hear the good news from your area.  Got some Green victories?  I can't wait to hear them.  BTW, these calls happen on the second Sunday of every month at 4pm.  So February & March, it'll be on the 8th.  At 4pm.

The connection info is here:

You'll probably want to familiarize yourself with this page:
https://www.txgreens.org/how_to_start_a_local_group
It talks about county groups because that's the most common varietal, but the same stuff applies to regional groups, campus groups, etc.

US Militarism Comes Home: Blowback from Wars Abroad

The increasing use of military tactics and forces within the United States is closely connected to decades of militarized foreign policy. Military practices developed and normalized overseas, including armed intervention, occupation, and counterinsurgency, are increasingly reflected at home in immigration enforcement, the policing of protests, and expanded domestic security operations.

This webinar presented by the Green Party Peace Action Committee will examine how domestic militarization has evolved, why it has accelerated in recent years, and what risks it poses to democratic governance and civil liberties. Panelists will explore whether these trends represent a fundamental shift in how political authority is exercised inside the United States, and what alternatives may still be available.

Death Penalty Action
Texas' aggressive execution schedule marks it as an outlier in its use of the death penalty while the majority of other states are on a downward trend of executions. In the last few years, Texas has been one of only a handful of states that have carried out death sentences - a primitive practice that has little to do with justice or prevention.
Our state has the killing of Charles Thompson scheduled for January 28th.  Read about the situation, sign the petition, & register for the virtual sit-in here: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-charles-thompson-in-texas

Group Highlight

Cooperation Denton is a municipalist org building towards dual power via decentralization, social ecology, solidarity economy, & intersectional feminism.  Sounds pretty Green, right?  Find out more at https://cooperationdenton.org/
This afternoon (Sat., Jan. 10), they're hosting a Zoom call with community organizer Ian Campbell on "Toward a Democracy of Neighbors: Lessons from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria."  Interesting!  2.30-4.30pm

Well, last month we said it was fixing to get real chilly, but it stayed around 85 in much of the state.  Despite the heat, there's WAY TOO MUCH ICE in Texas.  Find out if a local group is gathering hand warmers, socks, coats, & blankets to redistribute to those in need.  If there isn’t one - start it.  ERCOT failed us before & these data centers probably won’t help with the power demand.  Remember, the Texas state motto is "Friendship."  The kind folks in your community might well be friends you haven't met yet.

In solidarity,

Green Party of Texas
